Who qualifies

Vulnerable widows, older people living alone, and households where a disability or the loss of an income has made repair impossible.

Each household is assessed on the ground before anything is committed. The officer visits, confirms the household qualifies, and confirms who owns the land — the step that prevents a dispute after the house is built.

What is built

A one-bedroom house: foundations, cement-plastered walls, an iron roof, a sealed and painted floor, and a private latrine. It is built on the household’s own land.

The cost is Ksh 250,000 all in. It is low because the household and its neighbours do the unskilled work and supply what can be found locally.

How it is run

Through churches already established where the households are — PAG Gesangiro and IPHC Ombera Worship Centre among them. They identify the households, and they are there after the builders leave.

Phase 2

Three more houses over six months, in Keberesi, Charachani and Gesangiro. Budget Ksh 750,000.
